I loved dancing on the line between femininity and masculinity when it came to style in my late teens and early twenties. My favourite outfit was a graphic tee with Vans or Converse, but I would always have my hair, nails, and makeup done. I often wouldn’t carry a traditionally feminine bag, but I made up for it with my jewellery—most notably, an anklet on my left leg, which I considered my trademark.
Since then, boys have started dressing more femininely. The skater aesthetic that once inspired me has been replaced with Hello Kitty sweatshirts, skirts over trousers, and cropped tops (though I’ll admit, those can look hot on the right person). The shift has left me feeling uninspired, so I’ve turned to Pinterest—which just makes me feel like a cookie-cutter woman in her twenties.
Maybe I would have outgrown my masculine-leaning style by this age anyway, but I wish it had happened naturally, rather than because I ran out of inspiration.
